Hi monakim,

I agree with you that it likely is too soon for you to start using the OG. That said, to see what other quant materials are available, check out the GMAT Club reviews for the best quant materials and also read through some GMAT success stories to see what materials have worked well for other test-takers. Also, you may find it helpful to read the following articles:

Hi Monakim,
Basics should be clear before you start with higher difficulty. I would suggest you to hire a personal tutor or join a coaching and go through the basic concepts first. Decide your target and complete the basics in 2-3 weeks. Try completing at least one unit per day. Then go with OG.

Hi monakim,

Many GMATers spend 3 months (or more) of consistent study time before they hit their 'peak' scores, so if you are going to limit your studies to just 2 months, then there will likely be a limit to how much you can improve.

For free math practice and help, I typically recommend that people set up an account at Khan Academy (www.khanacademy.org). You've already done that - which is a smart choice. While the site is vast, you should limit your studies to basic Arithmetic, Algebra and Geometry. After spending a little time re-building your 'math skills', you can start your GMAT studies.

In addition, since it sounds as though you're just beginning your studies, then it would be a good idea to take a FULL-LENGTH practice CAT Test; you can take 2 for free at www.mba.com (and they come with some additional practice materials). If you want to do a little studying first, so that you can familiarize yourself with the basic content and question types, then that's okay - but you shouldn't wait too long to take that initial CAT. That score will give us a good sense of your natural strengths and weaknesses and will help provide a basis for comparison as you continue to study. A FULL CAT takes about 3.5 hours to complete, so make sure that you've set aside enough time to take it in one sitting. Once you have that Score, you should report back here and we can come up with a study plan.

Many Business Schools (and especially Finance-based Programs) view an Applicant's Quant Scaled Score as an indicator of how that Applicant might handle the 'academic side' of the Program, so you might need more time than you have planned for to hone all of the necessary Quant skills to score at a competitive level. In addition, the Quant section of the GMAT is NOT a 'math test' - it's a 'critical thinking test' that requires that you complete a lot of little calculations as you work through it. This is meant to say that once you're comfortable with the essential math that you need to learn, by focusing on Quant Tactics, you'll be better able to increase your GMAT Score AND better impress how Business School Admissions Officers will view your potential to handle their respective Programs.

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on your timeline and your goals:

1) What is the minimum Score that you need to apply? Do you have to perform at a minimum level in the Quant section?
2) What Schools are you planning to apply to - and what specific application deadlines are you facing?
3) Going forward, how many hours do you think you can consistently study each week?

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich
