Kellogg says that it sends interview invites to everyone but that's not the case. Not sure about your background but I have seen that not all Indian candidates receive an interview invite (for full-time MBA, I'm guessing its the same for 1-year program) and as per Kellogg its referred to as an interview waiver. But no one has ever got in without an interview, which means that if you don't receive an interview invite before the results come in then either you're waitlisted or dinged.
With that being said, receiving an interview in Kellogg is not probably as big a deal compared to other schools, since Kellogg tries to interview everyone.
Hi everyone,
I just graduated from Kellogg and am on here on occasion to give advice/answer questions. I just wanted to chime in because interview waivers can be a point if confusion for applicants.
All the comments thus far have been on point. Kellogg will try to interview as many applicants as possible. It is very important to them to get to know you as a person and not just as numbers/stats on a piece of paper. Unfortunately though they do have a limited number of interviewers available so not everyone will get an interview. If you don’t get an interview they will give you and “interview waiver”. This stems from previous years where the school committed to not reading the rest of your application until an interview was complete but if they ran out of slots, they would issue a waiver and then read your application and then decide to interview you after reading the application. However, there hasn’t been a report of anyone getting an interview after a waiver in some time on this forum and no one is admitted to Kellogg without receiving an interview. So while an interview waiver is not technically a ding because they could theoretically send you a very late invite, in most cases it is likely that you will be waitlisted or denied.
However, I will say that given that all interviews are being conducted virtually this year, I actually think this may be a better situation especially for international students. A lot of the interviewer availability issues comes from there not being enough interviewers in your specific geographical area. With virtual interviewers geography is less of an issue. So my personal opinion is that it is likely that there will be more interview slots available for candidates coming from areas with a lot of applicants.
Finally in terms of timing invites go out all the way up to the 6 week mark. In the past the Wednesday of week 6 is when waiver notifications go out. In my case, I didn’t receive and interview until the very last day of the 6 week period. So definitely be patient there is plenty of time left.
Hope this was helpful.
