Assume number of sandwich is x; so 5x+7x+8x=120 =>20x=120=>x=6
B=7*6=42
Hence answer is D

Hi All,

Ratio questions can be solved in a variety of ways, one of which is "brute force."

Here, we're told that the ratio of cheese to bologna to peanut butter sandwiches is 5:7:8. This means that the number of cheese sandwiches MUST be a multiple of 5, the number of bologna sandwiches MUST be an equivalent multiple of 7 and peanut butter sandwiches MUST be an equivalent multiple of 8. We're also told that there are a total of 120 sandwiches made. We're asked for the number of bologna sandwiches....

Based on the multiples described above, we could have.....
5 cheese, 7 bologna, 8 pb, 20 total
10 cheese, 14 bologna, 16 pb, 40 total
15 cheese, 21 bologna, 24 pb, 60 total
20 cheese, 28 bologna, 32 pb, 80 total
25 cheese, 35 bologna, 40 pb, 100 total
30 cheese, 42 bologna, 48 pb, 120 total

From that last line, we know exactly how many of each sandwich type there are when there are 120 total sandwiches. The number of bologna sandwiches is 42.

Final Answer:
GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,

Kudos for a correct solution.

KAPLAN OFFICIAL SOLUTION:

We're told that cheese, bologna, and peanut butter sandwiches are made in the ratio of 5 to 7 to 8. Every time they make 5 cheese sandwiches, they also have to make 7 bologna and 8 peanut butter. So there must be 5x cheese sandwiches (and we don't know what x is at this point), 7x bologna sandwiches, and 8x peanut butter. How many bologna sandwiches were made? Well, the number of bologna sandwiches must be a multiple of 7. But only choice D is a multiple of 7. In other words:

5x + 7x + 8x = 120
20x = 120
x = 6
7(6) = 42

Answer: D.

Cheese: Bolonga: Peanut = \(5: 7: 8\)

\(5x + 7x + 8x = 120\)

\(20x = 120\)

\(x = 60\)

Bolonga \(= 7x = 7 * 60 = 42\)

Hence, the answer is D

We are given the ratio of cheese : bologna : peanut butter = 5x : 7x : 8x. Since 120 sandwiches were made, we have:

5x + 7x + 8x = 120

20x = 120

x = 6

Thus, 7 x 6 = 42 bologna sandwiches were made.
