A. Indians were more reluctant to fight with the British colonists than

B. Indians were more reluctant about fighting with the British colonists than with

C. Indians were more reluctant about fighting with the British colonists than were

D. Indians were more reluctant to fight with the British colonists than with

E. reluctance of the Indians to fight with the British colonists was more than

I don't remember where, but I think I've seen this question before. Or maybe I've seen a question like this before. I don't know. Seems like a deja vu. Anyway, let's get on with it.

This question is about comparisons.

The intended comparison is between Indians and Arabs as they both have to fight the British colonists.

Keeping that in mind, let's analyse the options:

Quote:
A. Indians were more reluctant to fight with the British colonists than

Here the reluctance of Indians to fight the British is being compared to the Arabs and not to the reluctance of the Arabs. Hence, this option is incorrect.

Quote:
B. Indians were more reluctant about fighting with the British colonists than with

The meaning gets changed. This option suggests that Indians had to fight both the British and the Arabs. Hence, this is incorrect.

Quote:
C. Indians were more reluctant about fighting with the British colonists than were

This option makes the right comparison. Let's hold on to this one.

Quote:
D. Indians were more reluctant to fight with the British colonists than with

Same error as option B.

Quote:
E. reluctance of the Indians to fight with the British colonists was more than

The subject of the sentence is changed to reluctance, which is still acceptable. What isn't acceptable is the comparison. The reluctance of the Indians is being compared to the Arabs, which is incorrect.

Hence, Option C is the correct choice.

GMAT Club World Cup 2022 (DAY 9): The Indians were more reluctant to [#permalink]
A is wrong- The sentence is ambiguous whether the Arabs are being compared to the British colonists or to the Indians.
B and C are wrong- reluctant to is the correct idiom.
E is faulty comparison- reluctance compared to Arabs. Hence, E is out.
D is clear as written. Hence, answer is D.
