Re: Native to the warmer parts of southern Africa, the mopane worm, a larg [#permalink]

Per the meaning of the sentence, we have mopane worm, which is a type of large caterpillar, resembling silk worms. These mopane worms are often canned in tomato sauce or chilli sauce to enhance flavor.

Checking errors in each sentence:

(A) consumed by millions of Africans and that resembled silkworms
“that” points towards “a large caterpillar”. The sentence ends up meaning that large caterpillars are often canned in tomato sauce... Does not specifically point to mopane worm.

(B) consumed by millions of Africans and resembling silkworms
Hold.

(C) that is consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms
Resembling modifies the previous clause.

(D) that is consumed by millions of Africans and it resembles silkworms
“it” looks awkward in the sentence.

(E) consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms
Resembling modifies the previous clause.

Answer B

(A) consumed by millions of Africans and that resembled silkworms
(B) consumed by millions of Africans and resembling silkworms --> both modify large caterpillar
(C) that is consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms
(D) that is consumed by millions of Africans and it resembles silkworms
(E) consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms

In the above sentence,

"Native to the warmer parts of southern Africa" correctly modifies "the mopane worm"
"a large caterpillar" also modifies "the mopane worm"
"consumed by millions of Africans" and "resembled silkworms" modifiy "a large caterpillar" which in turn modifies "the mopane worm".
But "that" used after "and" creates parallelism error.

POE:
A) consumed by millions of Africans and that resembled silkworms: Parallelism error
(B) consumed by millions of Africans and resembling silkworms --> both consumed by and resembling silkworms modify a large caterpillar correctly.
(C) that is consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms --> here the mopane worm has no verb in the sentence
(D) that is consumed by millions of Africans and it resembles silkworms--> Incorrect sentence formation, makes no sense.
(E) consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms --> same as C, the mopane worm has no verb in the sentence

Option B is the answer

Native to the warmer parts of southern Africa, the mopane worm, a large caterpillar consumed by millions of Africans and that resembled silkworms, are often canned in tomato sauce or chili sauce to enhance flavor.
Parallelism: 1)consumed by millions
2)resembled silkworms

(A) consumed by millions of Africans and that resembled silkworms---past tense is incorrect as it still resembles silkworms
(B) consumed by millions of Africans and resembling silkworms --correct as both are adjectives
(C) that is consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms---Africans don't resembles silkworms
(D) that is consumed by millions of Africans and it resembles silkworms---that and it are not parallel
(E) consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms--------africans dont resembles silkworms

(C) that is consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms

Meaning: the worm, a cat consumed [past part] by many AND resembling [pres part] silkworms, are often canned…

(A) "consumed… that resembled" imps the worm doesnt resemble anymore, unintended; also, "consumed… that" isn't parallel, out.

(D) "that is…and it resembles", parallelism issue, out;

This one is about parallelism of the modifiers that affect the entity "caterpillar"

Error analysis:

Verb -ed modifier "consumed" is not parallel to "that resembled silkworms", which is a relative pronoun modifier = clause, so we must look for an answer that lists 2 parallel modifiers for "caterpillar" entity.

(A) consumed by millions of Africans and that resembled silkworms - Incorrect as error analysis
(B) consumed by millions of Africans and resembling silkworms - Seems good
(C) that is consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms - usage of comma after the second "that" is incorrect; in this one, the mopane worm does not have a verb
(D) that is consumed by millions of Africans and it resembles silkworms - that clause is not parallel to it resembles
(E) consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms - usage of comma after the second "that" is incorrect; in this one, the mopane worm does not have a verb

So (B) is our answer.

(B) consumed by millions of Africans and resembling silkworms
(C) that is consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms
(D) that is consumed by millions of Africans and it resembles silkworms
(E) consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms

(A) consumed by millions of Africans and that resembled silkworms - missing verb for 'that' in the sentence
(B) consumed by millions of Africans and resembling silkworms

In this sentence, we have a noun phrase modifier for 'the mopane worm'.
This noun phrase communicates 2 things about the caterpillar 'consumed by millions of Africans' and 'that resembled silkworms'
These two are participles in the form of verb-ed modifier and verb-ing modifier which can be parallel.
Thats why B is the best options.

(C) that is consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms - missing verb for 'that' in the sentence
(D) that is consumed by millions of Africans and it resembles silkworms - unparallel
(E) consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms - missing verb for 'that' in the sentence

Hence B

B

Here my reasons to eliminate each option.

Native to the warmer parts of southern Africa, the mopane worm, a large caterpillar consumed by millions of Africans and that resembled silkworms, are often canned in tomato sauce or chili sauce to enhance flavor.

(A) consumed by millions of Africans and that resembled silkworms
"and" is a llism marker here, the right side has a "that" where as none on the left side. Also, "resembled" is wrong meaning ways, it shows there's no resemblance anymore. Eliminate

(B) consumed by millions of Africans and resembling silkworms
"that" is removed, so llism is maintained. Also, "resembling" is better.

(C) that is consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms
llism error, left side of "that" is a modifier where as right side is a clause.

(D) that is consumed by millions of Africans and it resembles silkworms
Run on sentence, the second clause has no comma. Also, unnecessary wordy.

(E) consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms
llism error again.

A - unparallel --> that... that format --> for 2nd "that" there is no parallel 1st "that"
C - Unprallel --> that "is consumed" and "resembling"
D - "that" and "it" are not parallel
E - unparallel --> "that" is only present in the 2nd part.

Hence, B is the answer.

(A) consumed by millions of Africans and that resembled silkworms

'a large caterpilar that resembled silkworm' will be wrong because the mopane worm still resembles the silk worm

(B) consumed by millions of Africans and resembling silkworms
Correct parallelism 'resembling is continuous and correctly following parallelism rules

(C) that is consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms
comma after that is wrong and make the diction wrong.

(D) that is consumed by millions of Africans and it resembles silkworms
Not parallel.

'that is...'
and
'it is....'

(E) consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms
and that comma is wrong

(A) consumed by millions of Africans and that resembled silkworms ---- "and that" should have something to be parallel with, but it doesn't have it:(
(B) consumed by millions of Africans and resembling silkworms -CORRECT. consumed and resembling are parallel and used correctly
(C) that is consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms ---- in this situation, it is a phrase, not a sentence, because of lack of verb.
(D) that is consumed by millions of Africans and it resembles silkworms --- this structure is not parallel. Also, the mopane worm is plural here as indicated by "are"
(E) consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms ---- "and that" should have something to be parallel with, but it doesn't have it:(

Error Analysis: that resembled is incorrect here as mpane worm still resembles silkworms, its not in past tense

A) consumed by millions of Africans and that resembled silkworms- as mentioned in error analysis
(B) consumed by millions of Africans and resembling silkworms -correct and presents logical meaning
(C) that is consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms- use of comma after that is incorrect , use of that after large caterpillar leads to redundancy
(D) that is consumed by millions of Africans and it resembles silkworms -use of ambigious pronoun it is incorrect
(E) consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms -comma after that is incorrect

(A) consumed by millions of Africans and that resembled silkworms - consumed and that resembled are not parallel, as "that" is missing before "consumed"

(B) consumed by millions of Africans and resembling silkworms - Correct, “consumed” and “resembling” are parallel and correctly used as modifiers

(C) that is consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms - “the mopane worm” has no verb

(D) that is consumed by millions of Africans and it resembles silkworms - “it” is used incorrectly as not parallel with “that”, also it is unnecessary here

(E) consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms - “the mopane worm” has no verb

Removing the modifier we get "the mopane worm are often canned in tomato sauce or chili sauce to enhance flavor". The non underlined portion itself seems to have an SV error. I would love to have some explanation on this.

(A) consumed by millions of Africans and that resembled silkworms
"Resembled" is incorrect here as we have no reason to believe that the caterpillars no longer resemble silkworms. - Eliminate

(B) consumed by millions of Africans and resembling silkworms
Looks good

(C) that is consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms
Pronoun redundancy - "are often canned" modifies only one subject pronoun and the other is left without a verb

(D) that is consumed by millions of Africans and it resembles silkworms
Pronoun redundancy - "are often canned" modifies only one subject pronoun and the other is left without a verb

(E) consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms
Distorted meaning - Only those resembling silkworms are canned? - Eliminate

Answer is (B)

This is a Sentence Correction (SC) question, and we need to identify if the option A is correct or there is another more suitable option. Let us have a closer look at all options:
(A) consumed by millions of Africans and that resembled silkworms - The phrase "and that resembled silkworms" is awkward and does not have parallel structure to the previous part of the sentence "caterpillar consumed by Africans". Also after comma, we have the word "are" and in order to have a correct grammatical structure, we need the word "which". Incorrect
(B) consumed by millions of Africans and resembling silkworms - This version of sentence is concise and clear. It is easy to understand what the sentence states and there are no grammatical mistakes. Both structures "consumed by millions of Africans" and "resembling silkworms" are parallel to each other. Correct
(C) that is consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms - In this structure, it can be incorrectly thought that the caterpillar is consumed by Africans and "that" what does not make any logical sense. Incorrect
(D) that is consumed by millions of Africans and it resembles silkworms - This version of sentence states that large caterpillar and it resembes silkworms, which is both grammatically and logically incorrect. Incorrect
(E) consumed by millions of Africans and that, resembling silkworms - This version of sentence also incorrectly states that caterpillars are consumed by Africans and "that". Incorrect
