Ans is E. non underlined part is an independent clause so there should be a conjunction before it if underlined part is an independent clause. because of this reason, i rejected others. the sentence is more active itself.

Narrowed it down to A and C .C is passive So A is the correct option.

The clause "some of whom...." is not an independent clause, but (a subgroup modifier) dependent clause. The relative pronoun "whom" indicates that the clause is not independent.

"Some of whom have attempted...." cannot stand as a sentence by itself.

Can there be choices on GMAT which would differ only between passive and active voice?

In rare cases, yes.

It will help you if you know the difference between the two and when to use which. The wrong usage may sometimes alter the meaning as well.

Why C cant be the answer?
In option C the modifier is in passive voice as is "Fusion has been studied"?
