All these returns really go to show just how important essays and letters of rec are

Letters of recos - yes; Essays- I am seriously starting to doubt this. I mean- maybe if you are good, your essays will ooze with awesomeness. But I have a feeling if you have solid achievements in your past, it will reflect in all parts of your application and an average essay might pass through. Especially with the admission consultant industry thriving so much- I am suspecting the weight of the essay will get lower and maybe something like a resume might carry more weight.

I second this with full conviction. I think your profile is more prioritised than anything else.

I dunno There are some pretty amazing "profiles" that just got dinged

Yeah I am sure Essays matter as much as other subjective elements in the app. But to be honest for overcrowded pools especially, it seems like a brand-fest.

For Indians, it does seem like both or nada. I could be off base though but I doubt it.

Here’s a cool hindsight post for all of us who got bad news today. Seems like great advice.

Is it just me or are there very few Indians who got interview invites? I can see only 2-3 here + on Livewire. It sucks to not even be waitlisted (but that has it's own woes too, I guess).

From my experience - Indians at HBS are of 2 types:

a) IITians - They need and typically have high GMATs and GPAs
b) Super achiever - Consultant/Google/Gates Foundation + founded my own NGO + saved the world - GMAT is not a differentiator - does not help beyond a point - know of a 690 female and 730 male admit in this cohort.

Rest of us can just lick our wounds, I guess.

Buddies that have gone to top b-schools including HBS have suggested I call admissions to ask them why I was dinged. They said admissions are usually more open to letting military guys know what they didn't like in the applications than they are to communicating with most traditional applicants (I guess out of a sense of patriotism ;)). Anyone have experience with asking admissions?

I guess I had some hope because I am from IIT, with a 760 GMAT, work in the social impact space, and have good managerial and international experience. Must have been my less than perfect GPA and lack of a brand name job.

Yeah like Sandy Kreisberg says, it has to be all "Gold" for Indians, Adcoms may blink at some silver for other demographics but not for us. Basically, you need a trajectory, where there are only stellar successes, I could be wrong, but this is the sense I got from my research.

Did all of you (Indians in particular) report your GPA on a scale of 4? My undergrad school offers percentages and not GPA so I reported my scores in percentages only to all the schools I applied to? Do adcoms not perceive it positively? I see that everyone is reporting their grades on a scale of 4 in the interview updates.

Quick question. I was deferred to Round 2. They requested no additional materials. Would a GMAT retake be considered additional materials since their sent directly to the school? Was considering retaking.

Interesting. Can you confirm that you did in fact receive your ding via email and NOT via the portal?

I’m reporting this to the admins.

Guess HBS broke the tracker apart from their own portal :)
