Re: Sloan Profile Evaluation - Tools for B-School Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
Hi all!

Looking to get some input on my profile

Gender: Male
Nationality: Danish
Age: 25
Education: BSc in Business Administration and Project Management from Copenhagen Business School
GPA: 10.6 out of 12
Education, other: Exchange semester at National University of Singapore
GMAT: Took my first test while I was really sick. Got a 680 - I expect clear improvement on my next test.
TOEFL: 118
Work experience: Working for the family business at our US-office (HQ is in Denmark). The company engineers and manufactures high tech equipment for the wind turbine industry.
Specifically, I work with Sales and Business Development. I have worked full time for the company for 3.5 years (about 2.5 years in the US and 1 year in DK).
I also worked part-time for 2 years while studying (approx. 20 hours per week) for an investment firm developing solar energy. So clear background with a focus on renewables and finance.
Community and others: Served as a member of the study board at my bachelor's program. I was a contact person for exchange students coming to my university.
Post-MBA goals: Either continue working with the family business or start my own company.
Anything else?: I have a pretty strong international background, having worked in the US for a few years now, lived in Singapore for half a year and I have also lived in Spain for 1 year back when I was in 9th grade. I did a lot of bicycling in my youth and had a lot of races at a semi-professional level with sponsors.

One of the things I am really not sure about is how to approach the fact that I am working for the family business.
On the one hand, I can see how the school would like this, as I will be a "low risk" student in terms of securing employment once done with my MBA. Furthermore, working at the family business also means that I get to work with some fairly big tasks despite my young age. Also, I have really got to see a lot of different aspects of the business, both working in our production facilities helping out with manufacturing, seen the equipment in use in the field, and most recently worked closely with our top clients in the US.
But on the other hand, I am afraid if the schools may think that I have not truly earned the progress that I have made over the past years or that I am not truly qualified for what I do (lots of responsibility at a pretty young age).
Does anyone have experience with or knowledge about how B schools look at this?

Thanks so much in advance! Looking forward to reading your thoughts on my profile.

Re: Sloan Profile Evaluation - Tools for B-School Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
Hi!

I would like to have a sense of the trade-off between age and GMAT score. As well as an evaluation of my chances to get into Sloan.

The question is simple: Apply with a 680 GMAT this year (Intake 2020:R2) or apply with an estimated 710 GMAT but one year older (intake 2021:R1)?

Average GMAT for Sloan is super high, as we all know, so getting closer definitely matters, but also I turn 29 on 2020 so I fear about age discrimination. My first exam without any studying was 640 and I've gone up only 40 points so I know I can get higher with time and effort. The rest of my application would remain "the same" I would have an extra year of managerial experience though as I've recently been promoted.

Background
Demographics
Latin (Salvadoran) Male, 28
Studies
Majored in Economics from country's top business school
Magna Cum Laude
Partial Scholarship from a national program based on academic performance
GPA: 8.8 (10 point based scale, top 5 out of 90)
1 year double degree program (exchange) with a German university (majored in International Business Management)
Current GMAT
680
Work experience
5 years: 3 in FMCG for a world known company, 2 in a telecom multinational
3 years in analytics, 2 in Product Management. A total of 5 different roles/titles. Currently a manager with a team of 2.
Recommendations
Directors in both companies I've worked for. I was a direct report. I expect an honest but very good recommendation.
Community
Teacher in an "english for work" program directed at high-school students in low income area (past 2 years).
Member of a known international youth organization seeking to help local communities (current).
Others
Started an mobile app design company in 2012 (while studying 2nd year). Sold my stake after a year, company stills exists today (small).
Economic debate national winner representing my university
2nd place in national entrepreneurship competition
Post MBA goals
Start a tech consumer or BPO firm based in latam

Any help appreciated!
Thank you very much.

Hi Karl,

Wow--you have a really unique, interesting background that will help you stand out from the crowd. Business schools are very familiar with family businesses so I wouldn't be concerned that they will somehow look down on or not value your accomplishments. (In fact, many of them can appreciate that in some ways the dynamics of a family business are even more challenging than those of a company where you're essentially working with strangers. We've seen a number of truly outstanding essays over the years delve into this.) All of the top schools have a Family Business Club, and most restrict membership to students who already have work experience in a family business or intend to work for a family business after graduation. (And you're spot on that ad coms love to see people with guaranteed jobs already lined up!) I'd encourage you to find the contact info for students in the club--most will have an officer specifically for prospective students--and reach out to them to learn more about both how family businesses are viewed in the admissions process and the extra-curricular and academic offerings for students in this area.

Between renewable energy with experience in biz dev and investing and international work experience, you check a lot of boxes. As I'm sure you know, however, your GMAT will likely hold you back unless you can bring it up. We're seeing averages ~730+ at the top schools so if you think you left something on the table because you were sick I'd recommend retaking it--even waiting another year to apply if you need the extra time as you're fairly young.

I hope that helps and feel free to reach out if you have additional specific questions!

Re: Sloan Profile Evaluation - Tools for B-School Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
Hi,

Please, if you can, evaluate my profile as an international applicant for the MBA program

Nationality: Indian
Age: 29
Undergraduate Qualification: Bachelor in technology with specialisation in computer science engineering.
GMAT: not taken yet
Work experience: 6+ years
About me - An engineer turned entrepreneur, started a textiles manufacturing and trading business, while studying, with my father (as his prior experience and willingness to work in the same industry he's ever been). Completed my engineering side-by-side. Then left for job, but kept involved in business somehow of the location benefits as my manufacturing process used to take place in the same city I got a job in. Then moved back for business, leaving my job. Since then, been in business and have turned quite a lot of things around for us, and for the market in a good way.
key achievements --
Turned everything from credit to cash.
Took things online,
and added a customer-centric approach.

All these things and ideas were new for the market and my customers, but now productivity has increased for both.
I think entrepreneurship is a good idea for my MBA, but not sure if it’s a good idea in case I want to experience something different like a job maybe for some time. Also, I am so much involved into everything I do, I don't want myself to not make use of my 2 years at an MBA program, so I am a little cautious of schools where I may not find the right mindset of people whom I can be with.

Why MBA?
I have some ideas related to my field which I think can really help and change the way things are done. I want to incorporate tech into small scale manufacturing, and I don't mean just computers. I am looking for a school where I can get some tech exposure along with my MBA, as I may need to take 1-2 tech courses along with an MBA.

Extracurriculars: I am an active sports guy. I play tennis, have coaching experience of swimming (summers only :P) have formed 2 groups in my city -- running and cycling, started with 2 people now each group has around 500+ participants, 60% of them are moderately active, 80% are somewhat active.
I trek a lot and have taken most treks closer to my place, as I work 7 days so it's hard to take an off as treks need a lot of days, but I manage that somehow by minimizing risk.
I am a cyclist, too. you'll find me cycling in the hills, if not trekking.
I have taken part in brevet, 200 km one.
I am a part of the national cycling group and I represent my city for the group.
Also, I am a participant of a blood donation group, we provide blood to blood banks and the ones in need, in person, too. we don't charge for it, it's a free community service for anyone in need. we are presently handling 3 states and the group has around 5000 members, most of them are active. It's run by the people for the people, but then there are too many things to do.

References: From clients to these groups, I can ask anyone to recommend me, but I think it makes more sense if I ask my clients or business people.

shall I apply?

Re: Sloan Profile Evaluation - Tools for B-School Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
Demographic
28F Black American (parents are Caribbean immigrants)

GMAT
710 - Q44 V44. “Perfectly balanced, as all things should be.”

Undergraduate
3.45 GPA. BFA in Industrial Design (Product Design) from a school that’s widely considered the top design school in the US. Lots of clubs that are either inherently leadership based (peer mentor, freshman orientation leader), or where I held leadership positions. I also took a course at Sloan during undergrad that was a collaboration with students from my major at my school so I will definitely speak to knowing what Sloan quality looks like from the inside.

Work Experience
A little over 4 years of full time by matriculation. Mostly in data analytics across a couple of industries, most recently marketing strategy. One title promotion at my last job and I’m up for one at my current job that’ll happen between application and interview (if I get one). Supplemental work experience includes starting a medical nonprofit with my family (on my parents’ island) hosting and producing a PBS documentary show, and pro bono PR work for a startup toy company.

Post MBA Goals
I want to work in product management so I can combine my education and experience in a meaningful way. I’m also interested in emerging tech as a focus.

Concerns
Everything is kind of just “good” and nothing is knocked out of the park. GPA is not bad enough to hurt but not good enough to be a plus. GMAT is great in general but lower than average for Sloan.

Re: Sloan Profile Evaluation - Tools for B-School Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
Hi everyone!

Ok, let's try this...

Personal info: Brazilian male. Caucasian. 33 years old (will be 34 at intake). 1 child.

Career and extra-curricular activities

Before college: I had several other jobs, ranging from waiter to entrepreneur.
During college: President of Junior Enterprise (student-run consulting firm providing business advice to local small businesses.
Undergrad degree: Business - at age 28 (I come from a modest family so it took me longer to be able to go to college). Avg. graduation score 82% (we don't use GPA).
After college: 3 years in consulting (2 of them at MBB) + ~2.5 years in large tech companies (current)

Motivations
Why MBA: [short version] Become a more well-rounded professional, developing the skills (hard, soft and interpersonal) that I need in order to build a successful path to senior management.
Post-MBA paths: Go back to tech, preferably a FinTech, or go back to consulting for a few more years.

GMAT: 700 (Q46, V40)

A few more details... As I mentioned, I come from a very modest family. I started working when I was 12 and moved by myself when I was 15. I always studied in public schools (in Brazil, that means lower quality education, unfortunately). I had many ups and down in life, until eventually I managed to set a clear course. Applied to MBB for the first time on my senior year in college. Didn't pass. Went to a boutique firm for 1 year. Applied to MBB again. Passed! Spent 2 years there. Moved to tech industry (working at a Uber competitor) and currently work at a FinTech.

Thanks in advance!

Hi everyone, I am a 22-year-old Australian about to begin my final year of undergraduate studies with the intention to complete an MBA through Sloan's Early Admissions program. Due to my expected graduation date, I am eligible to apply to potential programs in 2021. I believe that my GMAT score and essay(s) will ‘make or break’ my application. I appreciate any feedback on my profile and would like to hear opinions on what would be an appropriate GMAT score to target for MIT Sloan. My current train of thought is minimum --> 710, target --> 730, dream --> 750.

(1) BACKGROUND

Work experience:

  • Big 3 German automotive manufacturer (Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes)

      6-month internship in Germany

  • Prestigious boutique German automotive manufacturer

14-month internship + thesis in Germany.

Only (possibly first) non-EU resident at the company

Extra curriculars:

  • Founding president of the mechanical engineering student association

      200+ members in six months

Organised an on-campus industry expo with 30+ companies and 1100 student registrations

Company Q&As, industry visits, skill workshops, etc.

  • Elected undergraduate representative of 12,000+ students on the school’s academic board

Hold monthly academic board meetings with the pro-vice chancellor and other high-ranking school officials. The academic board establishes the structure of academic programs and discusses school matters. There are a lot of NDAs!

  • In2Science mentor

Mentor a classroom of low socioeconomic high school students to increase their engagement, confidence, and aspirations in STEM.

  • Student-Staff consulting representative

Consult with my peers to identify program-related opportunities for improvement and present those issues at student-staff meetings.

  • Entrepreneurship club

      Committee member

  • Founded a side-business on a shoestring budget

Automotive part marketplace, similar to this. I DO NOT want to brand it as a start-up.

  • Very early stage NPO start-up

  • Golden Key International Honour Society

  • Formula SAE

Undergrad school/major:

  • Location - Australia

  • QS 250, QS Engineering 100

  • Mechanical Engineering (Honours) | Business Management

      Will graduate with two degrees.

      Received several awards.

      Featured on university promotional material.

  • December 2020 graduation date

Other education/coursework:

  • Certificate III in Music Industry

Race/nationality:

  • White

  • Australian

Sex:

  • Male

(2) STATS

Cold GMAT Scores:

  • MGMAT#1 620 (Q40 V35)

      Taken 23/12/2019

  • GMATPrep#1 530 (Q32 V32)

      Taken 26/12/2019

  • Potential test dates: July 20’, December 20’, January 21’, February 21’

Undergrad GPA:

  • 4.0 / 4.0

      6 subjects remaining.

(3) MBA INFO

Goal of MBA:

  • [Short-term] To move away from traditional engineering roles and into management style roles particularly in NPO start-ups. By being accepted into a deferred program I will have the confidence after undergrad to take professional risks, whether that is to begin/grow a start-up or apply myself in a smaller boutique firm. Furthermore, I will have the support of the school’s network to help accelerate my professional progression in the period before matriculation.

  • [Long-term] My longer-term vision is to make a positive impact in Australia. Currently Australia has a large dependence on its mining and farming exports however both industries are in decline which will ultimately damage the economy. The automotive industry was once in this position, unfortunately the industry succumbed to the downward trend and manufacturing has since been abandoned. My goal is to bring back the automotive industry to Australia in the form of renewable and sustainable practises thus contributing jobs, innovative technology, and pride to the country.

(4) OTHER

International exposure and languages:

  • Two months in Tanzania

  • Two years in Germany

Can speak German at an elementary workplace level which I learnt in my own time.

Matriculation:

  • Aim to work for 3-4 years before matriculating

Assuming that I am accepted into a deferred program.

  • Will be ~27 years old at time of matriculation

Essay discussion points:

  • Aspirations to lead and make a positive impact.

Unfortunately Fortunately I have no ‘sob stories’.

  • MBA goals

  • Time spent in Germany

Hi, I would like to ask an evaluation of my profile (going for the MIT deferred admission/early applicants program).

Demographic: 23 years old, Western European, Male.

Education: GPA around 3.8 out of 4. Currently pursuing M.Sc in Business Administration in a top university in my country - focus on innovation. B.Sc. with top grades. I have been studying for periods of 3/4 months each in 4 European countries (good universities).

Internships: IT consulting and Strategy Consulting (tier 2).

Awards: many scholarships for academic merits, currently pursuing an honors program as well.

Extracurricular: I was the president of a couple of university clubs, and a member of a couple more.

Pre MBA: probably strategy consulting.
Post MBA: tech in Europe (I have plenty of experiences that show my love for tech).

GMAT: 720 (V40, Q48). Very low IR though (4)

What do you think?:) Thanks!

Hello everyone

I am a 26 year old female from India.
GMAT : 760
Education : BTECH from a tier 2 college with GPA 8.25/10
Work experience : 4+ years of experience in a leading IT company in the country. I work in the automotive domain wherein I am involved in the development, validation and deployment of ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System ECU) softwares. For the past 1 year, I am in Japan, at client location, leading a team of 10 (both at onsite and offshore) wherein we are involved in the In Vehicle ECU Software development and deployment of the Driver Attention Alert System. I directly interact with our client so as to completely understand and analyse their requirements and then devise the strategy to achieve the same.
Extra-curricular : I am an avid reader and a writer. I have an online blog with over 20 published articles and over 1k followers.
Apart from this, I am a trained Bharatnatyam (Indian classical dance form) dancer, practicing dance right from the tender age of 6. I have performed at over 200 stages and have received many accolades throughout my school and university tenure.
Volunteer activities : Right from the age of 17, I have been involved in several NGO activities. While I was pursuing my 11th and 12th, I used to provide home tuitions for 10-12 under privileged students. Then while in college, I volunteered with Teach for India. I have also volunteered with Help Age India and taught our elderly basic Math and English.
I would like to know my chances at top Bschools in the world.

Hi gayatrisk1994,

Thank you for your post, and for sharing your profile. You, indeed, have a competitive profile for top universities. Can you share your post-MBA professional goals? Not only as they relate to the type of work that you want to do (including industry), but also the region you are targetting.

I would particularly welcome speaking about your experiences and ambitions, and see how I can help you make the transition. If you are interested, please reach out.

Best,

Susan
