Remember a rule "subjunctive verb is always plural"

May demand - necessitates use of subjunctive verb (bossy verbs). In this case we need to use plural form of verb.

The Russian government, in response to the actions of an American adoptive mother who sent her adopted son back to Russia, may demand that an American adoptive parent provide his or her child with an environment that preserves the child’s Russian language and culture; some argue that such actions could sacrifice children's lives to a phantom national interest.

(A) may demand that an American adoptive parent provide his or her child with an environment that preserves the child’s Russian language and culture; some argue that such actions could sacrifice children's lives to a phantom national interest.

(B) may demand an American adoptive parent provide his or her child with an environment that preserves the child’s Russian language and culture; some argue that such actions could sacrifice children's lives to a phantom national interest.

(C) may demand that an American adoptive parent provide his or her child with an environment that preserves the child’s Russian language and culture, and actions could sacrifice children's lives to a phantom national interest.

(D) may demand that an American adoptive parent provide his or her child with an environment that preserves the child’s Russian language and culture; actions that could sacrifice children's lives to a phantom national interest.

(E) may demand that an American adoptive parent provides his or her child with an environment that preserves the child’s Russian language and culture; some argue that such actions could sacrifice children's lives to a phantom national interest.

Good question, testing multiple topics at a go. 1st i notice semi-colons. Now both left and right parts to a semi-colon must be independent clauses. This eliminates D. In C 'and' is incorrectly use. The parallelism is violated here. Actions is acting as action noun whereas Demand is an action verb. Now in E parents provides in incorrect as parent is singular. Gone.

Now Between A and B. A wins out as demand is a Bossy verb that requires command subjunctive.

Hope it helps!

I think that the coloured portion is wrong ...
Singular will agree with provides only.

In this case, the subject is subjunctive and hence plural, hence E is incorrect.

Is use of semi-colon in option (A) correct?, because the second clause doesn`t seem to stand independent

If ever you see a subjunctive verb (e.g demand, promote, order etc), you should use the base form of the verb. Remember this!

A is the correct answer. D may be tempting but the part after ";" make it awkward and incorrect.

Hi Abhimahna,
Demand is a bossy word. But we have may demand in the sentence, which means a likelihood to demand. So, even in such scenarios, do we need to use the rule of subjunctive. I chose E instead of A because I thought that may demand does not sound bossy or fall under the subjunctive rule.

That is just a noun phrase starting with the noun 'actions' and then a subordinate modifier clause, because it starts with a subject 'that' and a verb 'could sacrifice'. Please appreciate that the insertion of the word 'that' renders the whole a clause a DC and there is no independent clause(IC) after the semi colon; If you remove the word ' that' from the phrase, the clause then will be an free standing IC
GMAT SC tests all the sentence types that we use such as simple , complex , compound and compound-complex sentences , as also the essentials of various clauses such as independent clauses, dependent clauses, relative clauses, and substantive clauses and phrases that are used as appositives, absolutes adverbial and adjectives. One should be thorough with them as we start the preparations.
One small tip here: if you want to know all those factors and their usage, then read RC passages calmly. It will help RC, SC, and AWA
