I think the shock was more at the seemingly complete lack of balance between international and domestic applicants. While everything you've said above is true / valid, Wharton historically gives out hardly any R3 interview invites at all. To see a sample size of c. 15 on sites like Clearadmit, which undoubtedly is only a small segment of the invites actually given out, with a fairly high number having frankly underwhelming stats, is surprising. While stats alone are definitely discussed on forums like this far too much, programs like Wharton do care about these things for their brand building / global perception. And while you're correct that the range includes people with a GMAT of 540 and GPAs below 3.0, these are exceptions, generally with truly extenuating circumstances or extremely unique perspectives and experiences to add to the campus. I would also be willing to bet that of the 20% falling outside of the 3.2 to 3.9 range, it is skewed towards individuals with a 4.0, and not those with below a 3.2.
These are trying and strange circumstances for everyone, but it is still ok to call a spade a spade. At the end of the day, these schools are all going to ensure that they have a full class come August. While they will all come out and say that they will not lower standards, lowering standards of acceptance is about as subjective as it gets -- having a full, tuition paying class is black and white.
Some clarifications on your points.

Middle 80% which I talked about GPA means that 10% are higher and 10% are lower, so there is no skewing to more 4.0s vs sub 3.2 GPA's that is not how match works. There are as many sub 3.2 GPA's as there are 4.0's essentially.

Lets do some math. If 10% of the class has a sub 3.2 GPA, that means there is roughly 86 students with sub 3.2GPA's. (10% * 865 enrolled). Wharton's acceptance rate post interview is roughly 50% based on generally accepted %'s. So if 15 invites are sent out, and 8 are accepted, that would only account for less than 10% of the 86 sub 3.2 GPA's. Which is roughly in line with about what % of the class comes from R3 vs R1 and R2.
On top of the % I just calculated above, consider this. 1) This is the internet, those interview invites are self reported. Its possible many students who got interviews with much higher stats or are international may not have responded. 2) It is also possible some of the posts are troll posts especially seeing the outrage that followed the earlier ones. 3) Have you considered that in the past some truly exceptional candidates never bothered submitting apps to H/S/W because they thought their hard stats kept them out of it, but because of the Covid situation decided to throw a hail mary app? And are merely getting the same invites they would have gotten all along if they had just submitted?

I think this is again hard to quantify for reasons I listed above of self reporting, and perhaps Covid 19 scared internationals away because they didn't want to risk the $$ to apply to a program they weren't sure they would be able to attend.
Ultimately, I doubt Wharton is accepting people for the sake of accepting people. There are plenty of students on the waitlist that would be happy to take any spots that open up. I am inclined to believe there is something to these students stories that just resonated well. Wharton has enough high stats to more than easily maintain their brand and global perception.
