Hi there,

can I just ask you - are there any other threads for GMAT Patterns beside Arithmetic, Absolute value and Reminders? I found them extremely helpful, but cannot find any other topic covered. Thank you for your answer ;)

We are working on other patterns. Will publish in a while.

hey Bunuel ,

Many thanks for this wonderful post and can't thank enough for your "tips , approach and concepts" discussed in each question.
My sincere request , please add the link in your signature....may be under new section called "Concept and Practice" as you are currently having "Resources" and "Collection of Questions".

Are there any other threads for GMAT Patterns?

thanks and regards

Hi Bunuel,

Where can I find all other patterns that have been identified by you or others (if any you are aware of)?

Thanks in advance for our help.

Regards.

Very helpful. Are there common "strategy patterns" or "solution patterns" to glean from these question patterns?

2025 Focus Update for the Absolute Value Patterns

We have gone through the latest set of questions and identified the latest patterns in the Absolute value questions. These are generally quite similar to their 10+year old cousins with exception that the DS section no longer contains absolute value questions, so some of the patterns are no longer used or have been changed.

📌 Major Patterns

Pattern 1: "Must Be True"
Questions testing logical implications of absolute value identities like \(|a| = |b|\).

Example 1.1 (Difficulty: Sub 505 Level)
If \(\frac{|z|}{w} = 1\), which of the following must be true?

A. \(z = -w\)
B. \(z = w\)
C. \(z^2 = w^2\)
D. \(z^2 = w^3\)
E. \(z^3 = w^3\)

Example 1.2 (Difficulty: Sub 505 Level)
If \(k^2 = m^2\), which of the following must be true?

A. \(k = m\)
B. \(k = -m\)
C. \(k = |m|\)
D. \(k = -|m|\)
E. \(|k| = |m|\)

Question Discussion Link

Example 1.3 (Difficulty: Sub 505 Level)
If \(|x| = |y|\) and \(xy = 0\), which of the following must be true?

A. \(xy^2 > 0\)
B. \(x^2y > 0\)
C. \(x + y = 0\)
D. \(\frac{x}{(y + 1)} = 2\)
E. \(\frac{1}{x + 1/y = 1/2}\)

Question Discussion Link

Pattern 2: Evaluate/Calculate
Focus on sign changes, expression transformation, and conditional evaluation of absolute value.

Example 2.1 (Difficulty: 505–555 Level)
If \(x \ne 0\), then \(\frac{\sqrt{x^2}}{x}\) = ?

A. \(-1\)
B. \(0\)
C. \(1\)
D. \(x\)
E. \(\frac{|x|}{x}\)

Question Discussion Link

Example 2.2 (Difficulty: Sub 505 Level)
If \(x < 0\), which of the following represents a positive number?

A. \(\frac{x}{|x|}\)
B. \(\frac{|x|}{x}\)
C. \(x|x|\)
D. \(-x|x|\)
E. \(x|-x|\)

Question Discussion Link

Example 2.3 (Difficulty: 555–605 Level)
Which expression equals \(0\) when \(x < 0\) and \(x^2\) when \(x ≥ 0\)?

A. \(x|x|\)
B. \(x + |x|\)
C. \(2x^2 - x|x|\)
D. \(\frac{1}{4(x + |x|)^2}\)
E. \((\frac{(x - |x|)}{2})^2\)

Question Discussion Link

Pattern 3: Equations
Equations that require breaking into cases based on the definition of absolute value.

Example 3.1 (Difficulty: 705–805 Level)
What is the product of solutions for \(x^2 + 4x + 7 = |x + 2| + 3\)?

A. \(-6\)
B. \(-2\)
C. \(2\)
D. \(6\)
E. \(12\)

Question Discussion Link

Example 3.2 (Difficulty: 655–705 Level)
How many solutions does \(|2x - 3| = x - 5\) have?

A. \(0\)
B. \(1\)
C. \(2\)
D. \(3\)
E. \(4\)

Question Discussion Link

Example 3.3 (Difficulty: 605–655 Level)
What is the sum of different values of \(x\) such that \(|x + 2| = 2|x - 2|\)?

A. \(4\)
B. \(\frac{16}{3}\)
C. \(6\)
D. \(\frac{20}{3}\)
E. \(8\)

Question Discussion Link

📌 Minor Patterns

Pattern 4: Greatest/Least Integer
Estimating absolute value expressions and comparing them to nearest integers.

Example 4.1 (Difficulty: 555–605 Level)
What is the greatest integer less than \(-|\sqrt{3} - 3|\)?

A. \(-3\)
B. \(-2\)
C. \(-1\)
D. \(0\)
E. \(1\)

🗂️ Bonus: Additional Absolute Value Questions (not purely Absolute Value)

Example A1 (Difficulty: 505–555 Level) — Sets
Number line points with absolute values \(r, s, t\). Average of coordinates?

Question Discussion Link

Example A2 (Difficulty: 555–605 Level) — Probability
X takes integer values 1–7. What’s the probability \(|X - 4| > 3/2\)?

Question Discussion Link

Example A3 (Difficulty: 555–605 Level) — Word Problem
An analyst defines “volatility” using absolute daily price differences...
