FROM From UCLA Students' blog: Introduction: Naomi Lim
Hello, everyone! My name is Naomi Lim, a first-year MBA student at UCLA Anderson. Below you can learn more about me:

Undergraduate Major: Supply Chain

Pre-Anderson Career: Since undergrad, I’ve worked in supply chain focused on strategic sourcing. First, I was in Sourcing at Motorola in the Chicago area. I really enjoyed collaborating with multiple functional teams to source and negotiate projects. Experiencing winter and snow-mageddon was key to my personal development. After 3 years there, I went to a nutritional firm to manage contract manufacturers for a mix of protein bars and beverages. They had a very fast product launch cycle, which drove a fast-paced and exciting culture.

Post-MBA Goals:  I want to go back into the tech industry in a product-focused role. One of the amazing things about Anderson is the exposure to multiple functions and industries. You’ll find students here going into a variety of roles, so it really allows you to pursue your career goals however niche they may be. Recently, I participated in DOJ Week, which provides an opportunity for Anderson students to visit various companies by industry. I joined the tech treck to further explore my interests and network with potential employers. One of the many companies that I had a chance to visit was Google.

What I’m most excited about: Being surrounded by intelligent yet approachable people is the most exciting part for me. The diversity in background and experience of our school drives meaningful discussions both in and outside of the classroom.

Why Anderson? The culture and student experience were what drew me to Anderson. The genuine regard for one another in helping us all succeed is truly refreshing. It sounds cliché but we live by our "Share Success" value. I see this through the ACT program, where 2nd years help 1st years with interview preparation, and when a fellow classmates offers to connect me with someone in their network. I encourage you to reach out to current students through our Connect With A Student portal or sign-up for an upcoming LiveGuide session to hear firsthand how our culture shapes and adds value to the student experience.

I look forward to blogging more throughout my Anderson experience. Stay tuned!

Received invitation to interview on Oct 26, visited campus last week for interview with 2nd year student

The most straight-forward interview I've had so far, was surprised that they didn't ask any behavioral questions (leadership style, leading others, conflict resolution etc). Interviewer picked up on random points he found interesting in my resume (extra-currics, and bizarrely, a college internship). bog standard questions:
-why mba
-why now
-why ucla
-short term goals
-how will you contribute to campus
-spent remaining time talking about my professional interests and answering my questions

because they were so few formal questions, it felt extremely conversational

FROM From UCLA Students' blog: Days on the job!

Hey all, been a while since I posted on the blog. Anderson has been keeping all of us busy and between on-campus company presentations, homework assignments, midterms and our upcoming finals we had to squeeze in a week for days on the job trip (DOJ). For the uninitiated during DOJ week all first years get a week off to visit various companies we are interested in working for. A lot of folks travel all across the country to visit potential employers, some even travel to international locations such as Hong Kong, Singapore and London.

My trip began in NY on Monday where I flew in with six other Anderson students. We had a few hours to get settled in before our early start the next day so we made sure to visit the very famous Halal guys food truck. The next day we traveled a lot visiting various banks all across New York. During the trip, we were graciously hosted by about 15 banks  the likes of which included Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, Bank of America Merill Lynch, Citi group and many more. We spent our days scuttling on the subway between one bank to the next and sneaking in lunches and taking in all that New York had to offer. In 2 days, we had covered 15 banks and were tired and exhausted but that didn't stop any of us from sending out our "Thank you" notes seeking informational requests at the end of the day. On the final leg of our New York trip, we got a special invite for an alumni mixer at the Yale club where we reconnected with some of the alumni who took the time to meet us.

We used Wednesday as our travel day to travel to San Francisco and checked in our hotel and explored the city for the few precious hours we had to ourselves. The next day we repeated our motions from NY and visited all the banks in sunny California, but all the banks were close enough to travel. Here too we met prestigious banks such as Credit Suisse, Qatalyst, Deutsche Bank, Barclays and a host of others. Again we were welcomed with open arms at all the banks and we even had Parker representatives present to provide us with some much-needed support. It's worth mentioning how much Parker cares about our career prospects and the lengths they go to ensure we sustain and nurture these relationships that have been years in the making and will serve future students for years to come.

Fruits of a successful DOJ trip!

Overall, our DOJ trip was a great success and we covered about 30 banks over a span of 5 days. This experience could not have been possible without the support demonstrated by our Alumni at the aforementioned banks making an effort to support and hire Anderson students. From my perspective I gained insights into the inner workings of various banks, got a feel for the team I could be working with and even bonded with other students who might be working alongside me during my summer internship.

Quick questions guys...As an international student I sent in original copies of both my degree certificate and my academic transcripts. They were actually sent from different destinations (I had my certificate but my transcripts were at my parents house) so when my degree certificate was returned on its own I thought nothing of it. After 2 weeks had passed and no sign of my transcripts I emailed the Admissions Office and their response was 'unfortunately, we only return degree certificates to applicants'.

Has anyone else experienced this or have any thoughts? Cheers

I asked if we could expect to hear back before the decision date and the admissions office said that they don't anticipate any early decisions going out this year. We should hear back on December 15th. Not unexpected really, given the deadline this year was nearly a month before last year's.

Does Anderson require original transcripts or degree certificates by the deadline, say Jan starting?? Wow, I didn't know schools need that!

They require it only if you get an interview call. Both of them within 30 days of the interview call. Nothing required by the application deadline. Only the softcopy to be uploaded which is done for every other school.

Getting transcripts from college is not that difficult and that's why they don't return it. For degree also, if you send a university certified copy in place of original degree, they won't return it.

The advice that UCLA Anderson provides below is excellent, not just for Anderson’s essays, but for most MBA essays. Read it carefully.

My tips are in blue below.

Your essays are the primary way for you to share your perspectives and plans with the admissions committee. The best essays are introspective, genuine and succinct in directly answering our questions and responding to our topics.

• You should try to distinguish yourself by showing what makes you different from others who share similar profiles.

• Personal expression is what we are looking for, not platitudes.

• Making a strong case for your future plans requires you to first do research on career paths and find one that resonates. Even if this target will change during business school, your application essays should lay out a clear trajectory for short-term and long-term goals. Do this by demonstrating how you expect to build on skills from your past, and those you expect to gain from the MBA.

• Essays are more compelling if they include specific courses, programs, groups, opportunities, activities, etc. from which you would benefit, if admitted to UCLA Anderson. These references are best found through website research, personal discussions and a campus visit (if possible).

• Content and clarity are key elements, as we seek superior communication skills.

• Style is a consideration too, although we understand that those who speak other languages may have different manners of expression in English. We do check your essays for plagiarism, so make sure you always submit your own work.

• Length does not equal strength. A well-written short essay can have even more impact than a longer essay. Please try to respect the word limits indicated below.

• All responses to essays must be on double-spaced pages that are uploaded as a document. We do not accept essays in any other media but written form.

Essay:

One essay is required, in written form only. One optional essay may also be submitted to supply information on extenuating circumstances.

We believe that the best results are achieved when you share success, think fearlessly and drive change. With this in mind, what are your goals at UCLA Anderson and in your short-term and long-term career? (750 words maximum)

Anderson has simplified it's essay requirements, but gives you enough room to write a revealing response. Make sure that essay shows that you can answer the question articulately and belong at Anderson.

First think about Anderson's motto: Share success. Think fearlessly. Drive Change. Think about the ways you those values are your values. How do those values motivate you to pursue the path your are pursuing? To apply to UCLA Anderson's MBA program?

A great way to approach this essay would be to discuss an experience or anecdote that reveals you acting according to these principles. Then connect that story and your values to UCLA Anderson's program and culture and your reasons for choosing its MBA program. Conclude by connecting relevant aspects of the Anderson MBA experience and program to achievement of your short- and long-term goals. Conclude by addressing the last part of the question: How Anderson's principles and "environment" will help you realize your post-MBA career goals.

Your particular story may benefit from a different order, and that's fine. Just make sure that the reader can follow and that you include all the requested elements.

Optional Essay:

The following essay is optional. No preference is given in the evaluation process to applicants who submit an optional essay. Please note that we only accept written essays.

Are there any extenuating circumstances in your profile about which the Admissions Committee should be aware? Please use your best judgment. (250 words maximum)

If there are extenuating circumstances that would add perspective on or “explain” a weakness, you can discuss them here. A few years ago, UCLA added the following: “Please do not submit redundant information in the Optional Essay.” Good advice for all optional questions. For more suggestions, please see The Optional Question: To Be or not To Be.

Reapplicants - One Required Essay:

Reapplicants who applied for the class entering in fall 2014 or 2015 are required to complete the following essay:

Please describe your career progress since you last applied and ways in which you have enhanced your candidacy. Include updates on short-term and long-term career goals, as well as your continued interest in UCLA Anderson. (750 words maximum)

This is the key question in every MBA reapplication: How have you enhanced your candidacy? Career progress is an obvious place to start and something you must address, but if academics were a weakness, then what have you done since you last applied to show you can excel at Anderson? Finally, if your career goals have evolved since you last applied, discuss that evolution.

If you would like professional guidance with your UCLA Anderson application, please consider Accepted’s MBA essay editing and MBA admissions consulting or our MBA Application Packages, which include advising, editing, interview coaching, and a resume edit for the UCLA application.
