Ask me Anything about GMAT Critical Reasoning

Hello and welcome to my CR Expert Topic. Let me know if you have any CR questions I can help with - strategy, specific ones, etc.

You may know me from forum discussion - I am one of the resident Veritas Prep Experts on GMAT Club. I have over 8,000 posts and 22,000 Kudos. I hope you find my replies and explanations helpful. If you have any specific questions about Critical Reasoning in General such as strategy/approach, feel free to post them here and I will be happy to address them. I intend to have this thread be as a "Everything You Need to Know about CR" type of thread.

If you have questions about a specific CR question and why something does not seem right, please post a link here for me with your specific question/concern. Please do not double-post - that's not polite and against the GMAT Club rules.

Thank you all - good luck on the GMAT and look forward to seeing you in the CR forum!
Karishma.

Hi VeritasKarishma,

Thank you for taking this initiative. :-)

Can you please shed some light on this - https://gmatclub.com/forum/university-p ... l#p2173571

I found option E to be lucrative as well ( as it kind of strengthens the premise that the university president makes to begin the argument )

Best,
Gladi

I understand why Gladi. I have explained here why (E) is not correct:

Request to all forum users:

I am one of the forum experts on the CR forum. If you would like me to take a look at any question on this forum, please mention it on this thread.

Since I receive 100s of mails everyday in my mailbox, unfortunately, it becomes very difficult to follow up on every query even if I am tagged on it. I do take a look at this thread on a daily basis and hence will certainly get to your query if you mention here.

Thank you!

here is not the right choice A far stretched.
Here we need to assume that
people shop max on weekdays and not on weekends.
Moreover traffic is at peak in morning only so we are assuming morning is best time to shop.

Is my reasoning correct?

could you please explain why E and not C??
The argument says that the stocks of X have fallen by 25%. the conclusion is about ANY mutual funds.
C says most of the stock-based MFs have fallen even further. SO the conclusion "any" wouldnt stand.

E says there is a dividend payout option. But how does this relate to loosing money as much as any other MFs??

(A) is actually irrelevant. And considering that logically, weekends would be the most appropriate time to shop, if anything, this option would weaken our argument.

Hi Expert,
I have 2 questions on strengthen and weaken question.
Q1: Why the term if true is used only in "strengthen and weaken question", not in other types of CR question?
Q2: What is the role of the term if true in strengthen and weaken question?
Thanks_

We already know that whatever the argument gives us, we need to assume that to be true.
Thank you so much VeritasKarishma,
I'm still confused about the term! If we know everything about the argument (the argument never tell a lie!), why GMAC uses the term "if true" to convince us that "the argument is 100% true"? Why this term (if true) is not used in other types of questions like inference, bold face question, etc..?

If the argument doesn't use extreme language (such as all people who ... have ... ), you can eliminate options using extreme language (words such as all, none etc appear in such options).
Hi VeritasKarishma,
Thanks for the nice tips. I'll be very glad if you enlighten the above statement by discussing 2 or 3 official CR questions?

Hey AsadAbu,

No I didn't, but answering it would take time. Unfortunately, there aren't really any specific search markers so looking for them actively will be painful. I am keeping this in mind and whenever I come across an official question which hits these parameters, I will post them here.

Hope you are fine with this.

Best,
Karishma
