GMAT Ninja's Nonstop 24-Hour Crash Course for Ukraine
(Almost) Everything You Need for the GMAT
By now, hopefully you’ve heard about our March 2022 ultramarathon GMAT fundraiser for Ukrainian charities. Early in the war between Ukraine and Russia, we wanted to do our part to help the current wave of Ukrainian refugees. GMAT Club’s founder, bb, is from Kyiv. My grandparents were from Kharkiv and Crimea, and they came to the United States as refugees after WWII. So the human toll of this war felt personal to us.
We decided to do a nonstop, 24-hour GMAT “crash course” as a fundraiser for five charities working in Ukraine. We raised $45,000, easily topping our original goal of $24,000.
The crash course itself was designed to cover everything you REALLY need for the GMAT -– albeit not in mind-numbing detail -– in a nonstop series of 24 one-hour lessons. I taught live on YouTube all night, and there was plenty of slurring, drooling, and fumbling. But hopefully, some of the content is legitimately useful if you're trying to conquer the GMAT. If not, maybe you'll at least be entertained by the slurring, drooling, and fumbling.

A crash course for all skill levels: what you're REALLY doing wrong on the GMAT
The 24 lessons are all built around the same theme: instead of covering the basics of every topic, we focused on pitfalls that are common for GMAT test-takers across a range of skill levels.
The crash course also included a countdown of the 10 biggest study mistakes I've seen students make in my 20+ years as a GMAT tutor, along with interviews with experts who can help you overcome test anxiety and perform your best on test day.

FAQ about the 24-hour nonstop crash-course for Ukraine
Q: Did you really teach GMAT on livestream for 24 hours straight? With no breaks?
- A: Yup. Please donate.
Q: Dude, weren't you a total mess?
- A: Yup. Please donate, even if it's just out of pity.
Q: I heard that the Cooking Channel once called you a “legend of global gluttony.” So, like, how did you eat if you didn't take any breaks?
- A: During most of the lessons, we put questions on the screen and gave viewers a few minutes to work through each of them; during the quant lessons, we'd sometimes offer a 10-minute, 5-question quiz. That time spent off-camera gave me enough time to shove food in my mouth. Lots of food. And three or four smoothies.
Q: Did you drink enough caffeine to, like, choke a moose or something?
- A: I drank less than I expected: a double espresso, a half-pot of coffee, and a Red Bull.
Despite what the ads say, Red Bull didn't actually give me wings, but it did make a vein in my forehead twitch uncontrollably during hour #21.
Q: Um, what did you do about pee breaks?
- A: I borrowed my son’s diapers.
Q: Eeeeeewwwww. You’re gross.
- A: Yes, I’m gross. And I’m joking about the diapers –- they don't fit, since I'm a legend of global gluttony. Don't worry, I used a nearby toilet as needed when questions were on the screen.
Q: Weren't you worried about having a stroke or something during the marathon?
- A: I wasn't worried. I’m pretty sure that Bunuel would have been able to heal me via the internet if anything had gone wrong. After all, the Holy Grail and Bigfoot are both looking for him.
Q: How did you teach 24 consecutive lessons without making epic mistakes?!?
- A: I made epic mistakes! Check it out, it was pretty fun.
Q: Where can I find the videos?
- A: The 1st 12 hours are here and the 2nd 12 hours are here. I will be very embarrassed by them someday (like, um... today), and so will my children.
Q: Why are there separate links for Part 1 and a Part 2? Are you trying to pull something here, you slimy ninja guy?
- A: YouTube only allows us to livestream for 12 hours at a time. If we go past that length, the video will get deleted. So we did a livestream for 12 hours, switched to a new link, and then continued for another 12 hours. Because we did it in two chunks, you can watch the videos anytime, and I'll be able to embarrass my children forever.
Q: How did you choose the charities for the fundraiser?
- A: We chose highly-rated charities that have the infrastructure to help immediately in a war zone. In most cases, we've spoken with contacts at the selected charities, and we're confident that they do good work and use donations wisely.
If you donate to the GMAT Club fund, we'll spread the donations equally across the five charities. You're also more than welcome to donate directly to one of them -- just let us know, so we can count your donation in our campaign totals.
Q: Can I still donate?
- A: Yes! We'll keep the list of charities on this thread as long as Ukrainian refugees still need their help. If you found the crash course helpful, please donate whatever you would have spent on a prep course of similar quality.
And if you'd prefer to donate to a different cause in a different part of the world, that's wonderful, too.

Thank you so much Charles for doing this event - this is amazing. I hope you/us/people in Ukraine (and other unsafe parts of the world/everyone survives. This is an amazing fit of self-sacrifice with great usefulness

I hope they keep the recording in youtube with all the links to donate so that even if people miss the deadlines, they can donate post watching the video whenever they do

Great effort that the team is determined to put forth to help Ukraine.
I can't even imagine what Ukrainians must be going through. As a Civilian doing something that is so different and something we have never thought in wildest dream. My heart goes out to all the people.
GMATNinja bb This is a great effort by whole GMATClub team benefitting everyone with a session for charity.
I have few questions:
1. Sadly, we all are not as super as Charles to attend 24 hours session. So, will it be there on YT for future references?
2. I see few Quant topics are TBD. Can there be one topic for Nasty word problem. Word Problem that looks like passage, and how to break it systematically?
3. In the other thread I saw educators ready to contribute - Can we have a Quant session Ian and Chetan (If they are Ready). It will be great if even Harry from GMATNinja takes a session.
4. A topic on Mock. How to take, When to take and what to do when 6 Official mock are not enough. How to prepare your own Mock set. - I have seen this discussed. But if you have a slot to discuss this.
I have donated and also ask others to donate for Humanity and all the efforts that the team puts up.
We have 3 more days to go (Depends on your time zone)

Thank you for this question, everybody! Yes, the marathon will be available on YouTube afterwards. We're still working out the details, but in all likelihood, we'll leave the full, unedited video up on YouTube, and then we'll also break them into one-hour chunks by topic and repost those, too. At least the ones that don't involve too much stumbling and slurring.

Friends, just a quick note to say that I've updated the schedule in the top post above.
It's very possible that we'll make last-minute changes during the livestream if something weird happens, but this is pretty much the final schedule. If you have specific questions or requests about these topics, just let us know!

I wanted to thank you personally for putting yourself through so much to help others, both the members of GMAT Club who watched your lessons with great interest and the unseen beneficiaries of the larger donation drive. I will confess that this was my first time watching any of your content. I simply prefer to read instructions or teachings, to be able to skip around according to my own understanding of the content. But from the moment you started the marathon, I was engaged. (I was watching while running, sort of participating in a challenge of my own creation: run without soled shoes for 20K, all while breathing through my nostrils only. My efforts were buoyed by your own, and I made it.) I watched hour after hour, in disbelief that another hour had passed in the middle of every hour on the clock. I even participated in the chat from time to time, as you noted yourself at some point when Ian Stewart and I had an exchange.
From the perspective of a tutor, I can say that I felt validated in many of my own pedagogical techniques when I saw you offering similar advice: I use "housekeeping" for "hygiene," for instance, but the idea is the same, and I also eschew mechanical thinking (although sometimes to a fault in Quant). I got up before 4.00 the next morning because I knew you would still be going, and I stayed with you until I had mere minutes before my first meeting of the day with a client. But that last hour was a treat. No, I do not enjoy watching others suffer, but you seemed to be having so much fun, working through those difficult Quant questions. I think I recognized every one, and I missed the same inequality question some time back for the same reason—I made an assumption. At least you had a legitimate excuse.
I left that marathon lesson feeling inspired, wanting to improve certain aspects of my tutoring, getting back to basics in my practice sets of questions. To be honest, I was in a lull with Quant after hitting a high in December. (I even wrote a post about that triumphant moment when everything had seemed to make sense.) But seeing that you were employing sound logic to work through those difficult questions, even at the end of your tour of duty, I decided to go back to those same GMAT Club Quant questions, new ones, with a different mindset. I stopped thinking about outcomes and just worked from the ground up. So far, I have not missed a single question, even one of those 95-percent-difficulty questions in a set from earlier today. Sometimes I like to say that when I teach, it is as though I have waved a magic wand, and my student is enchanted with pixie dust for a while, feeling as though nothing on the test was insurmountable. I have seen such a marked change in my students before, as I am sure you have in yours. It was a rare opportunity to be on the receiving end, but all I had to do was watch and listen. You are a professional and an expert among peers.

I wish I could say that was because of his Ukrainian blood (i have a lot more of it and I fell apart on hour 17 )

Really appreciate GMATNinja for your valuable time and efforts to conduct the non-stop 24-hour session. This has helped me big time to prepare for my upcoming GMAT exam. Aw, thank you so much for the kind words, IN2MBB2PE! I'm glad that the marathon is actually useful for somebody. It's all such a blur now, and I'm not convinced that I said anything coherent, especially once we got past hour #3 or so. Maybe I'll watch some of the videos for Halloween next year, since the footage probably resembles a zombie movie.
